THE BUZZ: From its memorable opening scene forward, Unbroken is a gorgeously shot, well-acted, and assuredly directed WWII prestige picture. Perhaps its main shortcoming is its screenplay, which never fully animates the the movie despite being based on a remarkable life story and directly tied to its source material, Laura Hillenbrand's biography of Louis Zamperini. Everyone involved with the physical production has greatness in them, including Angelina Jolie as a director; I know she will get her hands on an ace screenplay and soon make her true mark as a filmmaker. As Zamperini, Jack O'Connell shows his extraordinary value as a leading man; as good are Miyavi and Garrett Helund in their supporting roles.

	Into the Woods (2014)  124 min   -   Comedy | Family | Fantasy | Musical Metascore: 71/100 (7 reviews) A witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse the curse put on their family tree. THE BUZZ: We know that Maleficent made the movie world safe for live-action fairy tales, and we hear that director Rob Marshall has found the right shades of dark and light storytelling to make this risky adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical a hit. Aside from Marshall, the biggest winner here could be Chris Pine, who has received excellent reviews as Cinderella's preening Prince.

The Gambler (2014)  111 min   -   Crime | Drama | Thriller Metascore: 58/100 (11 reviews) Lit professor and gambler Jim Bennett's debt causes him to borrow money from his mother and a loan shark. Further complicating his situation is his relationship with one of his students. Will Bennett risk his life for a second chance? THE BUZZ: Talent-wise, everything seems to match up between the original movie and this remake: Mark Wahlberg reached an initial career high as Dirk Diggler began to crumble into addiction, so we're interested to see what Wahlberg, now at middle age, brings to such a character; Brie Larson gets the Lauren Hutton role as she navigates her post Short Term 12options; director Rupert Wyatt, with both The Escapist and Rise of the Planet of the Apes to his credit, keeps us interested with his commitment to making a character-driven projects.

THE BUZZ: Ava DuVernay bowled over the film-festival circuit with her 2012 project, Middle of Nowhere, and she's arrived as a Hollywood filmmaker with direction of Paul Webb's script, which previously had been in development with Lee Butler. David Oyelowo had a supporting role in Nowhere and it is excellent to see him arrive simultaneously with DuVernay; both the director and her star have earned high praise for the intimate portrait of MLK that is framed against his history-making march to Montgomery, while being unafraid to show the man's human, less than heroic attributes as well.

American Sniper (2014)  132 min   -   Action | Biography | War Metascore: 66/100 (11 reviews) Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle's pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. THE BUZZ: From the advanced reviews, it sounds as though Clint Eastwood has directed one of the best movies of his career and completely abandoned his typical moral-forward approach to making war pictures in favor of a more quiet, meditative style reminiscent of Unforgiven.

THE BUZZ: When Tim Burton went back to the Frankenweenie world, some of us wondered -- and hoped -- his career might experience a sea change and the masterful storyteller would look to more original and peculiar stories for his new projects. So here we are with Burton's latest, an attempt to correct a chapter of art history that saw Walter Keane take credit for his wife Margaret's influential paintings, and his first indie studio project since ... since ... forever?

Everyone wins here: Burton, weary Burton loyalists, leads Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, the supporting cast led by Krysten Ritter, and Margaret Keane's legacy. Though perhaps her Wikipedia page says it all: "Margaret D. H. Keane ... is an American artist ..." while her former husband's reads: "Walter Stanley Keane ... was an American plagiarist who became famous in the 1950s for claiming he had painted a series of widely-reproduced paintings depicting vulnerable waifs with enormous eyes."

THE BUZZ: Marion Cotillard is developing a truly international career and her starring in a new film from the Dardenne brothers is the kind of event that should result in curious, reverent audiences packed into cramped theaters throughout the holidays and into the new year. Cotillard is definitely in the dark-horse Oscar pool for Best Actress too. Is it leading to say that this is the kind of story that would never be made in the U.S.?
